Persephone's Story

Persephone was a Greek Goddess. The daughter of Demeter, who was the main goddess of the earth.  She was extremely beautiful, and her uncle Hades (remember this is Greek Mythology!) was so captured by her ethereal beauty he rose up from the Underworld, using his helmet of invisibility and took her. Demeter was grief stricken when she could not locate her daughter. In her anger and despair she stopped tending  the earth, everything began to wither, die and become barren. Zeus, as the head of the Gods of Mt Olympus came down and demanded that Hades return her. Hades was cunning, he didn't want to release her, but knowing his brother would cause a war he gave Persephone a pomegranate to eat. This was considered to be the fruit of the Underworld. Once eaten, it meant she could not return to earth. However, Zeus would not allow this and negotiated a compromise.  Persephone was to spend Autumn and Winter with her now husband in the Underworld (dark), as Queen of the Underworld and to spend Spring and Summer on Earth (light) with her mother Demeter.

Persephone's journey through the Underworld/darkness  had changed her. She'd actually become more powerful than her husband who was King of the Dead. She was now the Queen of the Living and the Dead and embodied huge powers, including the powers of prophecy, foresight and healing.

As with everything astrological, the cycle of her powers arose in more recent times in the recent Percy Jackson series of books and films. The Persephone shown in Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, portrayed her as a wily, wise and intelligent woman who knew how to craft situations for the best outcome. She thus devised a scheme whereby those who came to visit her in the Underworld could leave, unseen. She gave them pearls. One was simply to throw the pearl to the ground and think of where one wanted to go and instantly they would be transported.

Persephone's Pearls are an offering from the combined wisdom, healing gifts and skills of Leonie Marks and Dhanistha Devi Dasi.  As described on "Your Journey"  page, they provide a blueprint of your soul journey for the next 12 months, with the companion practical resources you need for the spiritual journey of the descent and return, which is always cyclically occurring in life.
